Creating a new society on Mars requires rethinking everything from scratch. But, in the process, we can obtain insights to apply them in the future on Mars and in the present on Earth. Historians look into the past to learn from it to apply those learnings. The Futuverse™ brings us the opportunity to learn from the future and use it in the present.

For humans to live on Mars, it will require to be highly efficient with resources, self-sufficiency, and a society where its members genuinely support each other. The environment on the Red Planet is so harsh that not doing so will jeopardize the survival of the entire colony. Additionally, for Martians to have a fulfilling life, we need to create a safe physical ecosystem and a place where humans will grow emotionally and with a strong sense of identity.

However, the challenges are so significant that it is not realistic to think we will get it right in the first place. On the other hand, the digital environments allow testing, validating, and learning from ideas that can permanently improve the digital ecosystem.

By being part of Onteco’s community, you will be able to become a pioneer and potentially shape the future of humans, as your contribution can change the digital replica of a potential future on Mars. Such a digital twin is intended to continue evolving until it can be built on Mars.

However, by changing the future, you can also change the present on Earth, and we expect many insights that we could directly apply to our current problems. Additionally, as we will be exposed to new ideas in an immersive environment, such an experience will spark alternative ways to live our day-to-day lives.

A true journey is a step into discovering the unknown. As we do not know what we do not know, we might realize on the road what things we need to learn. In many cases, innovation sometimes is found, not purposely searched. Starting a journey towards creating a sustainable large-scale community on Mars will spark many opportunities for innovation.

We also acknowledge that providing answers to many unknowns will require a lot of trial and error. Therefore, we envision creating A/B testing, where solution A and solution B are tested in the immersive digital environment to identify our community’s responses, allowing for evolving and learning from them.

Onteco Mars will provide the platform for an open-sourced collaboration. The intelectual property and insights that will result in a collective brain inside the community will be available as open sources. In addition, large data sets, machine learning, and other artificial intelligence tools that result from the information available inside Onteco™ will be available to its community. While members of our community will be able to create, offer and sell content where its authors fully own copyrights, any solution that is a derivative work of solutions designed collectively by our community will be available as an open-source. Further explanations on these details will follow soon.

Building a new reality on Mars will require reinventing our lifestyle and adapting it to our surroundings. On Earth, we give many things for granted. Some of them are provided for free by nature, such as oxygen, minerals, or water. Other resources result from centuries of human legacies, such as infrastructure, supply-chain processes, economic systems, or political models for society. On Mars, we will need to reinvent it all. We acknowledge that the task is complex, and to make it easier for the Onteco™ community, we are starting with a few case studies. These case studies will provide a scientific road map towards scaling the processes and ideas to create a new reality. Then, thanks to workshops, lectures from experts, content creation from our members, and brainstorming sessions, our community will expand on the debate and solutions for these topics.

We are going to start building future Martian settlements and for that we would like to focus the community on four axes:

Fashion

Fashion provides the opportunity to integrate many topics that we use on Earth. Material sourcing, manufacturing, design, sustainability, supply-chain, identity, and many more are combined around fashion. For example, will the fashion on Mars will be androgenic?; How can fashion ensure sustainability and efficiency during manufacturing while still providing a strong opportunity for identity?; How will style evolve on Mars?; How will clothing respond to new physical requirements that will exist on Mars, such as low gravity?. These questions and many more will need to be addressed in-depth inside our community. Different options and ideas will be tested in Onteco’s digital environment. Such insights will be applicable for a future on Mars and invent a new fashion on Earth. Our community could collectively open the doors for a new way to understand a whole new industry.

Fashion provides the opportunity to integrate many themes that we use on Earth: sourcing materials, manufacturing, design, sustainability, supply chain and identity; among so many others.

Will fashion on Mars be androgenic? How can you ensure sustainability and efficiency during manufacturing while still offering a great opportunity for identity? How will styles evolve on the Red Planet? How will fashion respond to the new physical requirements that will exist on Mars, such as low gravity?

We will address these discussions in depth within our community. We will be testing different options and ideas in Onteco’s digital environment. Such knowledge will be applicable for a future on Mars and will create a new fashion on Earth.

Food & Diet

Science has demonstrated that having large animals on Mars is very costly. Due to the food they eat, the space they need, and the energy they require to stay alive, it is not efficient to use animals in our diet. Earth is also facing many challenges related to the type of food. Will the martian diet have to be vegetarian? What about developing an insect-based industry?; What about cellular meat?; How can we grow food in an extreme environment such as Mars?; How to integrate energy production into the manufacturing process for food?; How can we ensure self-sufficient settlements where farming, energy production, and urban settlements are fully sustainable without relying on complex supply-chain infrastructure? These questions and many more will need to be solved on Mars and Earth. Our community might add new ideas and implement them in the digital environment and real life!.

Arts

Self-expression, identity, and an emotional connection among the citizens will be of utmost importance on Mars. While Science provides answers to our context, arts forces us to look at our reality differently. But our communities on the Red Planet will be very different from Earth, so Arts can provide exciting insights on how to look into such new realities. Resource and material management will be essential on Mars, so what will digital art’s role be?

How will art bridge societies on Earth with those on the Red Planet? What will multi-planetary art consist of? Our community could collectively open the doors for new art.

We want our community to propose topics relevant to us to incorporate them into the detailed analysis for the case studies. Each idea will add innovative elements to the debate and then move them into action.
